United "4" Kids

United Way of Trumbull County is committed to supporting kids so they

may thrive and reach their full potential.

Reading Great by 8

United Way of Trumbull County implemented the Reading Great by 8 Early Literacy Initiative during the summer of 2014. This initiative is a continuum of programing that reaches children from birth to age 8, each designed to increase the number of Trumbull County children reading at grade level by grade three, with an emphasis on children from low-to moderate-

income families.

In 2023, students entering first grade and second grade participated in programming to address reading and phonics, math, social-emotional wellness, and visual and perceptual motor skills.  Books and activities centered around bugs and dinosaurs to keep the kids engaged while learning.

This program was possible due to funding received by the PNC Charitable Trust.

Kindergarten Readiness

Starting school at any time can cause anxiety but for kids entering kindergarten, it can be an overwhelming experience.  Readiness kits help ease the transition for both kids and parents.

School Pantries & Supplies

Food, clothing, and essentials are provided to support local students. United Way also placed fridges in two  Warren City schools to offer kids healthier, fresher foods.

Every year, United Way provides book bags through the Stuff the Bus program sponsored by Huntington Bank.

StoryWalk in Perkins Park

The United Way of Trumbull County, Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, and the City of Warren have partnered to bring a StoryWalk to Perkins Park! A StoryWalk is an excellent outdoor family activity that combines movement with reading.

The Perkins Park StoryWalk starts at the end of the United Way Born Learning Trail, near the playground, and runs along the walking trail next to the river. As you stroll down the trail, you’re directed to the next page in the story. Visit the StoryWalk this fall to read Bear Can’t Sleep by Karma Wilson! New stories will be shared quarterly.

The United Way of Trumbull County is proud to help Sponsor the StoryWalk in Perkins Park with our focus on being United “4” Kids and promoting healthy kids and families. With the addition of this outdoor reading activity, not only will children be excited and inspired to read, but they get to do so while physical in the fresh air.

The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. StoryWalk® is a registered service mark owned by Ms. Ferguson.
